Artificial intelligence lab Anthropic announced an updated usage policy prohibiting users from engaging in sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior toward its Claude models. The policy change was reported by CNET, Business Insider, Digital Trends, and The Register. The new terms go into effect on November 12. [1][2][3][4][8]

Anthropic stated that the rule against model abuse is intended to apply only in extreme cases of repeated cruelty rather than minor disputes. Business Insider and Digital Trends reported that the company designed the policy to prevent real-world harm and promote responsible product use. CNET and Business Insider noted that the announcement has ignited debate among commentators and on online forums regarding whether software should be granted behavioral protections. [1][3][4]

Alongside the model abuse restrictions, Anthropic introduced and clarified several other provisions. Business Insider and Digital Trends reported that the updated usage terms spell out new restrictions on deceptive campaigns, election influence, weapons development, surveillance, law enforcement, and hardware connected to Claude. [2][4]

Business Insider reported that Anthropic describes most of the recent modifications as clarifications of its existing operational rules ahead of the November 12 implementation date. [2]
