Trading activity on prediction platform Polymarket has come under scrutiny after political markets drew over $600 million while exhibiting unusual post-election patterns, ReadWrite reported. Questions have emerged regarding whether headline trading volume reflects genuine outcome interest or speculative activity. [1]

In the platform's Ethiopia election market, traders placed more than $41 million on a candidate who ultimately did not become prime minister, according to ReadWrite. Conversely, the winning candidate attracted just $173,000 in total wagers. [1]

The pattern formed part of more than $600 million in cumulative volume generated across Polymarket election contracts for Ethiopia and Romania, ReadWrite reported. On both markets, active trading extended beyond major electoral events, with much of the capital moving into long-shot wagers. [1]

Prediction markets operate as exchange-traded platforms that allow users to buy and sell contracts on specific event outcomes using monetary incentives. The most prevalent structure is a binary option market, which settles at a price of either 0 or 100 percent upon expiration. [2]

The irregular activity has raised broader operational questions for prediction exchanges regarding market duration, specifically how long election contracts should remain open after polls close and official results are established, according to ReadWrite. [1]
