Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber's United Artists have greenlit an untitled thriller starring Denzel Washington and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, and The Wrap all reported that the studios approved the feature project. The Wrap reported that the film is scheduled for release in theaters on Oct. 1, 2027, while The Hollywood Reporter noted a late 2027 release window. [1][2][3]

The script was written by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner, according to reports from Deadline and The Wrap. The plot follows a former police detective serving a life sentence who is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Granted compassionate release with six months to live, he returns home to his family. The Hollywood Reporter noted the project was once referred to as The Frame. [1][2][3]

The project reunites the lead talent after separate schedule openings. The Hollywood Reporter reported that Washington was previously set to star in a high-cost Netflix movie centered on the general Hannibal before it was canceled. Meanwhile, McQuarrie ended a long collaborative period directing Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible franchise to focus on new film projects. [2]

The greenlight arrives alongside internal leadership changes within the studio. Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, and Variety all reported that Amazon MGM Studios reorganized its film division by naming Julie Rapaport and Alana Mayo as co-heads of film, production, and development. Both executives report to head of film, streaming, and theatrical Courtenay Valenti, with each overseeing approximately half of the studio slate of 30 annual features. [4][5][7]
