Researchers at Georgia Tech have developed a digital forensic tool capable of recovering deleted conversations from local AI applications on mobile phones, Digital Trends reported. The tool can extract deleted chat history from a device and rebuild the retrieved data into a functional chatbot session. [1]

The tool, named ORISA, targets on-device AI assistants. Digital Trends reported that while running AI models locally prevents data from being transmitted to cloud servers, chat information remains stored in the local memory of the mobile phone. [1]

Digital forensics involves the recovery, investigation, examination, and analysis of material found in digital devices, particularly in relation to mobile hardware and computer crime. The discipline expanded from early computer forensics following the growth of personal computing and mobile devices. [2]

According to Digital Trends, ORISA demonstrates that hitting delete within a local chatbot interface does not completely remove data from physical phone storage. The system allows users to continue interacting with the reconstructed chatbot session after recovery. [1]
