Creators across the Asia-Pacific region are turning YouTube Shorts into vertical, serialized microdramas. According to the YouTube Blog, these multi-part mini-series rely on fast-paced, 60-second scenes to deliver complete narrative arcs on mobile screens. [1]
The YouTube Blog reported that microdramas on the platform surpassed 6.5 billion views in the first half of 2026 alone. Channels are expanding their international reach by using built-in features including multi-language audio tracks, AI-driven subtitle localization, and localized metadata to distribute localized content globally. [1]
Duanju, translated into English as microdrama or short drama, originated in China as a web or television series optimized for smartphone consumption. Series usually consist of 20 to 100 episodes, with individual episodes lasting between one and two minutes, resulting in a total runtime similar to a feature film. [2]
As FTMQ Creators reported earlier, competing platforms are also expanding into vertical series. TikTok announced a multiyear agreement with Made By Us Studios at MIPCOM Cannes to co-produce creator-led vertical series for its primary app and its dedicated microdrama platform, PineDrama. [3]
