James Gunn Begins Writing Next Project During Superman Sequel Post Production

DC Studios co-head James Gunn confirmed on Threads that he has started writing his next film project. The Wrap, Variety, and Deadline all report that Gunn disclosed the progress while working through post-production on his upcoming feature. When asked on social media if he was ready to begin his next script, Gunn responded that he was already in it while waiting for the assembly edit. [1][2][3]

Principal photography on the follow-up to Superman finished in August, according to The Wrap. Variety reported that the movie, titled Superman: Man of Tomorrow, is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027. Gunn is writing and directing the film, which serves as a follow-up to his 2025 movie Superman. [1][2][8]

Gunn began his screenwriting career in the mid-1990s at Troma Entertainment before directing films such as Slither and Super. He later directed Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, The Suicide Squad, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He now serves as co-CEO of DC Studios. [3][7]
