DC Studios co-chief James Gunn announced that the casting process for Batman in the rebooted DC Universe is close to starting. The Wrap and Variety reported that Gunn discussed the franchise update alongside his wife Jennifer Holland during an upcoming episode of the podcast titled The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast. Gunn stated that it will not be long before they cast the role, while dismissing rumors that the character has already been selected or lined up for unannounced cameos. [1][2]
According to Variety and GamesRadar+, Gunn confirmed that the actor chosen to play Batman will be around the same age as Superman star David Corenswet. Gunn added that while hiring a established movie star is not mandatory, the studio intends to pick the individual who is the best actor for the specific role. Robert Pattinson will continue to portray the character separately in Matt Reeves' standalone feature film series. [1][2][10]
Gunn also addressed the wider future of the franchise's character slate. Variety reported that Gunn described Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman as the core diamond characters of the DC Universe during recent posts on Threads. He added that Harley Quinn will almost certainly return to the screen, though Deadline and Variety reported that original actor Margot Robbie might not reprise the role. [4][5][7]
The announcement marks the next stage in the studio's long-term plan under Gunn and co-chief Peter Safran. Polygon and Gizmodo reported that Gunn is using his podcast to officially establish canon for the new DC Universe following his appointment as studio co-head in 2022. As FTMQ Creators reported earlier, Gunn is also writing his next feature project while preparing for future theatrical releases under the eight to ten year DC Studios roadmap. [3][4][6][13][15]
