OpenAI plans to merge the Chat and Work tabs inside ChatGPT into a single unified experience, according to reports by Digital Trends, TechCrunch, 9to5Mac, Mashable, ZDNET, BleepingComputer, and Thurrott.com. TechCrunch and Mashable reported that OpenAI outlined the interface update in an email sent to users. Digital Trends, TechCrunch, ZDNET, and Mashable stated that the combined layout will first be released to a select group of users for feedback before a wider rollout takes place. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
The existing desktop software features separate Chat and Work sections inside the ChatGPT interface. Mashable noted that Chat is currently used for everyday conversational tasks, while Work handles longer tasks such as research, analyzing information, and creating documents or presentations. Separately, 9to5Mac reported that users of the older ChatGPT Classic app received messages informing them that the app will soon be retired. [2][3][4]
Under the new system, ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same usage allocation pool. Mashable reported that shared usage limits for ChatGPT and Codex will begin in December 2026 for subscribers on Plus, Pro, and Business plans. Mashable added that while Codex will remain a separate section, it will share its full usage allowance with ChatGPT starting next month. [2][4]
Codex is an artificial intelligence coding agent developed by OpenAI for software engineering tasks such as writing code and fixing bugs. It is accessible through the ChatGPT web application, a dedicated command-line interface, desktop applications for Windows and macOS, and various integrated development environment tools. OpenAI reached a valuation of approximately 852 billion dollars following a funding round in March 2026. [8][10]
