OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT extension for the Google Chrome web browser, allowing the assistant to view open browser tabs. The Verge and Unite.AI both report that the feature lets users grant the artificial intelligence tool access to their active tabs. The rollout follows the end of the standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser project. [1][2]

Users trigger the feature by tagging Chrome inside the ChatGPT web or desktop application, according to The Verge. OpenAI published a demonstration video showing the tool analyzing and comparing three open browser tabs that contained sofa listings. [1]

Unite.AI reports that the update brings computer use capabilities to the Chrome browser. Meanwhile, TechRepublic reported earlier in October 2026 that malicious Chrome extensions had targeted 900,000 users to steal chat data from ChatGPT and DeepSeek. [2][3]

ChatGPT reached more than 1.2 billion weekly active users as of September 2026. The platform had previously reached 800 million weekly active users by late 2025. [6]
