Filmmaker Curry Barker is releasing his next horror short film, titled Mama Bear, on YouTube on October 29. Tubefilter and iHorror both report that the director is debuting the project directly on the digital platform during the October Halloween season. The release comes as digital video creators in the horror genre gain increased traction with mainstream traditional film studios. [1][2]

Tubefilter reported that independent creators have become valuable assets in Hollywood over the past year. Summer box office hits included Kane Parsons with Backrooms and Barker with his theatrical release Obsession, while creator Markiplier brought his project Iron Lung to cinema audiences. Tubefilter noted that maintaining momentum from these projects into 2027 makes the current fall season critical for horror creators. [1]

Barker is an American filmmaker, actor, and comedian who co-created the YouTube channel that is a bad idea alongside Cooper Tomlinson. He wrote, directed, and acted in the 2024 horror feature Milk and Serial, followed by Obsession. Barker is also set to release Anything but Ghosts in 2027. His theatrical feature Obsession earned more than $522 million at the global box office, placing it among the highest grossing independent films ever made. [3]

The decision by high profile directors to publish new work on YouTube highlights the platform's ongoing importance for distribution. Tubefilter reported that despite growing interest from traditional studios, YouTube remains a vital venue for horror filmmakers to retain audience reach and test new concepts. [1]
