Tesla plans to allow vehicle owners to add their personal cars to the company autonomous robotaxi fleet starting in the second quarter of 2027, according to The Verge. Tesla Vice President for Autonomous Driving Ashok Elluswamy announced the target timeline during the company third quarter earnings call. [1]

The Verge reported that the software running the dedicated Cybercab is identical to the software used in the Model Y. Company executives stated that the shared software stack will enable personal vehicles to join the ride hailing network. [1]

The Tesla Cybercab is a two passenger battery electric robotaxi built specifically for autonomous operation. It operates without a steering wheel, pedals, side mirrors, or rear window, relying entirely on a camera based autonomous driving system instead of lidar or radar sensors. [2]

The announcement provides a concrete deadline after years of promises regarding unsupervised autonomous driving capability. It remains to be seen whether the company will meet the second quarter 2027 target date. [1]
